I rented a car last week and hit the road. I came back to my own bed at night, but for two days I got to wander down dirt roads and commune with the sky. It is one of the primary reasons I like driving so much... access to the sky. Even in places that have lots of trees and buildings, you can find a strip of sky above the highway.
But when the highway runs through a prairie and the sky stretches from horizon to horizon, well that is an altogether different experience. I breathe easier. As if the walls of my lungs want to feel the expanse for themselves. And when the sky is filled with clouds, it becomes transcendent... like hearing a song I love or putting on my favorite pair of jeans. I feel understood. I feel connected.
